Good Things Utah: How Miss Utah 2016 has gone beyond Utah’s borders to prevent suicide

On May 15, 2017, Lauren Wilson appeared on Good4Utah’s Good Things Utah program for a segment on her platform. Watch the interview here.

Miss Utah 2016, Lauren Wilson joined us today with the Board Member of the Utah Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Taryn Aiken-Hiatt to discuss a topic that most find uncomfortable to do just that, and that is suicide.

Taryn explained that Utah has one of the highest suicide rates and is the leading cause of death for individuals between ages 10 and 17.

Since she was crowned at the Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant last June, Lauren has brought attention to this epidemic throughout the borders of Utah and beyond through her platform, “With Help Comes Hope: Suicide Awareness and Prevention.”

Lauren suggests having and open and honest conversation about suicide with your child can lead to prevention, and learning and educating yourself and your child about the warning signs and risk factors can help too. She urges individuals not to shame nor exclude those that suffer from any sort of mental illness.

With only a few weeks left, Lauren will pass on the title of Miss Utah to one of over 50 eligible young women in our state.
