On April 7, 2018, the 54 local titleholders headed to this year’s Miss Utah competition in June joined with hundreds of their sister queens across the nation to give back to their communities as part of the fourth annual Miss America Day of Service.
Queens from across Utah gathered in Lehi to offer service to Primary Children’s Hospital — Utah’s local Children’s Miracle Network hospital — with the help of parents, pageant directors, teen titleholders, and Little Miss queens.
Over the span of three hours, more than 200 participants worked on some 4,400 projects for Primary Children’s. The projects ranged from making fleece blankets to stuffing and sewing medical dolls and building craft kits to keep children entertained during their hospital visits.
In addition to helping their local CMN hospital through their Day of Service activities on April 7th, Utah’s titleholders also raised money for the Children’s Miracle Network, collecting several thousand dollars in the span of just two weeks. The money will go to support Primary Children’s as well.
The Miss America program has been partnered with the Children’s Miracle Network since 2007, and with the adoption of the CMN as the national platform 11 years ago, titleholders from around the nation have raised millions of dollars to aid the organization. The money raised for the Day of Service is ultimately just a fraction of what Utah’s 54 contestants have raised overall for CMN; a final fundraising total will be released at the Miss Utah 2018 pageant in June.
All told, during this year’s Day of Service, Miss Utah’s contestants and their supporters completed more than 100 medical procedure dolls, 50 fleece blankets, 180 monster puppet kits, 300 button bracelet kits, 200 paper fan kits, 150 droid kits, 400 silly glasses kits, 200 paper doll kits, 1500 ring and bracelet kits, 60 pillowcase car mats, and 500 necklace kits.
The projects completed at the Day of Service will be delivered to Primary Children’s Hospital over the coming weeks, but the queens’ service to that hospital, to the Children’s Miracle Network, to their communities, and with their local platforms will continue.
