Miss Provo and Miss Nebo received preliminary awards during the second night of The Miss Utah 2017 Scholarship Pageant. Miss Sandy and Miss Provo received awards for the Power2Become shoe drive and Miss America Serves Fundraiser.
LIFESTYLE AND FITNESS IN SWIMSUIT PRELIMINARY WINNER
Miss Provo, Madison Monson was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit winner. She received a $200 scholarship for her award. Madison is a junior at Brigham Young University studying business management with an emphasis in marketing. Her platform is, “Read to Succeed”: Advocating Literacy in our Community.”
Talent Preliminary Winner
Miss Nebo, Lizzy Palmatier was the preliminary Talent winner for her classical violin performance of “Hot Canary.” She received a $200 scholarship for her award. Lizzy is a senior at the University of Utah studying violin performance. Her platform is, “Helping Abused and Neglected Children Through Foster Care Advocacy.”
Power2Become Shoe Drive Winner
For the third year, each contestant was asked to gather 1,000 pairs of used shoes as a fundraiser for projects that will bring clean water, food and education to people living in Burkina Faso, Africa through the Power to Become nonprofit (p2b).
Miss Sandy, Katie Ann Powell raised over 15,000 pairs of shoes. She received a trip to Burkina Faso with the organization to help build wells.
Miss America Day of Service Winner
On April 18, 2017, the Miss America Organization held a national day of service for titleholders serving across the country. The Miss Utah 2017 contestants raised funds for Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and worked on projects for its patients. Miss Provo, Madison Monson received a$200 scholarship for her fundraising efforts.
The third and final night of preliminary competition takes place Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre.
