Miss Nebo and Miss Utah County Win Preliminary Awards at Second Night of 2016 Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant
Power to Become Shoe Drive and Miss America Serves Day Winners Announced
SALT LAKE CITY — June 16, 2016 — Miss Nebo and Miss Utah County received preliminary awards in the Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit and Talent competitions during the second night of The Miss Utah 2016 Scholarship Pageant.
Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit Preliminary Winner
Miss Nebo, Brynn Christensen was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit winner. She will receive a $100 scholarship for her award. Brynn is a junior at Utah Valley University studying public relations. Her platform is titled, “Stand Up Utah: Bullying Prevention.” After winning the award she said, “It felt amazing to be standing up there with so many other mentally and physically strong women.”
Talent Preliminary Winner
Miss Utah County, Lizzy Palmatier was the preliminary Talent winner for her classical violin performance of “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.” She will receive a $100 scholarship for her award. Lizzy is a junior at the University of Utah studying violin performance. Her platform is titled, “Foster Care: Let’s Do This.” She said, “I felt terrified after flinging my bow across the stage that I’d lost it, but I guess I handled it well so I’m grateful for that.”
Power to Become Shoe Drive Winners
This year each contestant was asked to gather 1,000 pairs of used shoes as a fundraiser for projects that will bring clean water, food and education to people living in Burkina Faso, Africa through the Power to Become nonprofit (p2b).
The top two contestants who collected the most shoes were:
- First Place: Miss Richfield, Rachelle Kunzler raised 10,726 pairs of shoes and will receive a trip to Burkina Faso with p2b paid in full for her efforts.
- Second Place: Miss Herriman, Tanesha Bland raised 7,370 pairs of shoes and will receive a trip to Burkina Faso with p2b with partial airfare for her efforts.
Miss America Day of Service Winner
On April 16, 2016, the Miss America Organization held a national day of service for titleholders serving across the country. The Miss Utah 2016 contestants raised funds for Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and worked on projects for its patients. Miss Orem, Jesse Craig was recognized for her fundraising efforts and will receive a $200 scholarship.
The third and final night of preliminary competition will continue Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre.
